Shammi Kapoor: Pain overwhelmed the Valiant Warrior in the end

Shammi Kapoor the evergreen effervescent star of Bollywood passed away at wee hours on 14th Aug. His heroic struggle against his illness is what inspired the whole Industry. Shammi Kapoor kept a cheerful disposition almost right till the end. Amitabh Bachchan was deeply saddened by the passing away of Shammi Kapoor and his reaction was, “A million memories hurry past as you drive down to his (Kapoor’s) ‘Blue Haven’ residence. A cozy warm and welcoming apartment where we had spent many wonderful evenings and nights with him and his effervescence. There as I walk past his still pale figure embalmed and kept in a freeze container, you feel as though he would spring out of it and with his feisty elan invite you over to dine with him,”

Shaami Kapoor fought on till the very end till he could not take it anymore. Amitabh Bachchan broke the news  Shammi Kapoor’s death through his blog when he wrote “It’s always that dreaded moment in the early hours or deep in the night when that phone call comes and bears the news of a crisis. Shweta, walked into my room gingerly and in the dark spoke up softly – ‘Papa! Shammi uncle passed away just now! I sat up. The first words that come to your mouth are…Oh! God!…and then everything else takes over,”

The Whole Bollywood Industry will miss the ever smiling and kind hearted Shammiji. He was like a Father Figure in Bollywood and for all Bollywood fans he was the ultimate style icon. Yahooooo to that! Amen!

Though the magic of Shammi Kapoor was experienced by generations away from the one I grew up in. His songs, and the stylish, light-hearted portrayal of the romantic hero was quite popular during my growing up years too thanks to weekly movies and the chitrahaar sessions on DD.
In the later years, his warm grandfather image in ads like Pan Parag and a few movies was also quite endearing.
May you rest in peace!
Leaving you with some super awesome, unforgettable, evergreen melodies that have been synonymous with the epic that is Shammi Kapoor. And this is going to be one long play list - a good companion for your Sunday...
